We are more than a test score!
"When you improve a little each day, eventually big things occur...Not tomorrow, not the next day, but eventually a big gain is made.  Don't look for the big, quick improvement.  Seek the small improvements, one day at a time.  That's the only way it happens - and when it happens that way, it lasts."  (John Wooden, successful basketball coach at UCLA)

I would like to share some insight into the science course sequence change that was made three years ago.  I was sitting in the room when the curriculum team, which was composed of the 6-12 science department teachers, building administration, and a superintendent made the decision to change the course sequence.   First, it is important to understand that curriculum changes occur in a context and are made with the best interest of students in mind.  We do not always have all the information we need from Pennsylvania Department of Education and we do the very best we can with the information we do, including our collective professional experiences.

It is important to understand the process for curriculum evaluation at RASD.  I believe I can share a perspective that will give a little insight into the context, which will help you to understand where we are with the science curriculum.  The bottom line we have observed the changes that were made three years ago, we monitored students performance across grade levels, we monitored pass failure rates in both math and science and we have had substantial staffing changes within the department.  With that said we are in the process of making both short term and long term adjustments to the science curriculum.

Please note:  this is in reference to the processes at the 6-12 grade level in the RASD.  Also note, I apologize for the length.  If you want to read specifically about science, scroll to the bottom.

The first day of school for the 2015-2016 School Year will be Thursday, August 27, 2015.  Homeroom begins at 7:30 AM.

RASD CHILD FIND (August 10, 2015)

If you have concerns regarding your child’s academic performance and achievement in school; behavior in the classroom; and/or mental health or medical problems that interfere with achievement, growth and/or progress, the Ridgway Area School District is able to offer you and your child assistance.

Likewise, if you believe your child is demonstrating outstanding talent or showing the potential for preforming at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to same age peers, the Ridgway Area School District is able to offer you and your child assistance.

Through the Office of Students Services, RASD offers screenings and evaluations that will assess your child’s needs as they relate to his/her academic achievement and emotional/behavioral growth. You can find out more about these screenings and evaluations by contacting the RASD Assistant Superintendent at the Office of Student Services at (814)776-4255 or mcmahonheather@ridgwayedu.com.
